New Year, New Garden! Sign up for Early Spring Gardening Classes!

Welcome to 2013!  I hope everyone has made a resolution to make this year’s garden bigger, better, more diverse and more productive than ever!

One of the best ways to get the most use out of your garden beds is to plant an early spring crop, then plant a summer crop behind it, then plant a fall/winter crop behind that.  The whole concept is coined “Succession Gardening” and allows you to get the most from your garden space each year.  It requires you to do some planning, and the use of low tunnels to regulate the temperatures, but it isn’t too complicated.

Many of you have seen my early spring lettuce, beets, kohlrabi, radish, onion, and kale crops when you’ve been by to pick up your plants in May.  I start these beds in early March to get them to mature for an early spring harvest and to make sure I can harvest them in time to plant tomatoes, peppers, squash, and other crops in the same location later in the spring.

This spring I will be offering some gardening classes to show you how to get the most out of your gardens throughout the year.  Included in the class will be all of the materials and plants to fill a 4′ x 12 ‘ bed as well as an hour of instruction on how to set up the garden and continued e-mail support throughout the spring to help you out with the nuances of low tunnel gardening.  The cost of the class will be $50

Materials provided:

15′ length of Agribond floating row cover and 3 Hoop Loop support braces.  Both of these can be re-used for several years of gardening.

Your choice of 12 containers of spring seedling plants including several varieties of lettuces, kohlrabi, onion, kale, beets, arugula, and chard.  You will also receive a packet of radish seeds to direct plant for a continuous harvest of them for salads all spring long.

All participants in the classes will be part of a special e-mail group where I will keep you abreast of the timing of planting, weeding, harvesting, and watering as the season progresses.  You’ll also receive some of our favorite recipes for using your spring bounty.

Class sizes will be very small (5 per class) to make sure that I can attend to each of your garden’s needs throughout the spring.  I will be offering classes on Saturday, March 2nd and on Sunday, March 3rd.  There will be a morning class at 9:00 a.m. and an afternoon class at 2:00 p.m.  The classes should last about one hour or so.  If weather conditions are not favorable on those days (heavy rain, snow, etc..), we’ll re-schedule the classes for the following weekend, March 9th and 10th.
