Online Plant Sales OPEN!

Today went very well with quite  a few folks stopping by to get plants and following social distancing guidelines.  Good job everyone!

I have quite a few Ananas Noir, Brandywine Black, Black Cherry, CDBA, most of the Dwarf Varieties, Early Girl, RPGSS, Sungold, Sunrise Bumblebee, Purple Bumblebee, and Yellow Pear left.  I have just a few of about 25 other types, but am not going to list them as there aren’t many of each.

I have a few eggplant left, shishito peppers, jalapeno peppers, and some superhots as well.  I’m out of basils and cucumbers.  I have papalo and perilla ad Korean mint.

If you’d like to just have me pick out your plants, I’m more than happy to do that.  Just say in the notes of your payment how many plants you’d like and if you’d like large fruited or small fruited tomatoes; sweet, hot, or super hot peppers; Italian or Asian eggplant and basil; and slicing or pickling cucumbers.  I’ll find plants that fit your needs and who knows, you may end up with a new favorite!

I will only be accepting online orders and payments from now on…PayPal only, no checks or cash.  The first day orders may be picked up is Sunday, May 2nd.

UPDATED PLANT LIST CLICK HERE

To keep my sanity and make this process as effective and efficient as possible, I ask for you to follow these steps to place your orders for plants.

  1. Determine which varieties of tomato, pepper, eggplant, cucumber, and/or herb plants you would like to have in your order and the quantity of each.  Please review my list as some varieties have changed since the initial publication.
Multiply the number of plants you wish to purchase by $2.50 to come up with your total cost.
  2. Use PayPal to send money to kctomatotimes@gmail.com
  3. In the “notes” section, include your list of plants (Use the abbreviations if possible) and quantity of each.

Also include the date you would like to pick up your plants.

Plants will be available beginning May 3rd .  Orders must be placed at least TWO days prior to your pickup date to ensure I have time to fill the order.

  4. Plants will be in boxes by my driveway gate beginning at 8 a.m. on the day you indicated that you will pick them up.  My address is 215 East 97th Street, KCMO
  5. Understand that if I am out of a particular variety that you ordered, I will substitute it with a comparable plant variety.

Open Sales this Saturday!

With some relaxation on the Covid 19 situation, I’m going to attempt to open for plant sales on Saturday morning, May 9th from 8 a.m. to noon.  I will fill all existing orders I have now, but will no longer be accepting orders for pickup.

We will be following strict social distancing guidelines by allowing only 2 customers at a time on my back patio.  Please bring your own box or container to carry your plants home in.  I will be accepting cash, check, or payment through PayPal.

All transactions will be no-contact and I will have a drop box for you to put your payments in.  I will remain in an area adjacent to the plants and will guide you the best I can to find the plants you want.

A week or so ago I found a stash of plants I had not potted up and I was able to get several varieties back in the inventory.  I do not have a complete inventory of what I have, but I do have at least 50 types of tomato plants left, several types of sweet and hot and superhot peppers, and eggplant as well.  My herb and cucumber (except for perilla) supply is all but gone, so don’t count on those being available if you are in need.

When you arrive at my home (215 East 97th Street, KCMO),  please use the circle drive to avoid parking on the street.  If you come back to the patio and see two or more people already there, please wait in the driveway until they are finished purchasing their plants.  If for some reason, people are not able to practice social distancing and be patient, I will lock the gate and shut off sales, so please be patient!

Thank you so much!

Plant Ordering Now OPEN again….temporarily!

I have had some time to get my plants sorted a bit and now will be able to have sales again.  I am out of a LOT of varieties, but still have fantastic types that I know you’ll love even though you may not get your favorites.  Substitutions to your list will be highly likely at this point, so please understand that before you place your order.

NO MORE PLANT ORDERS….FOR NOW!

I am not sure how many plants I’m going to have left after I fill orders for the rest of this week and this weekend.  After Monday, I will revise my list and possibly open up for more orders.  Demand has been so high this year, that I am afraid I’m going to run out before everyone gets their plants…hopefully not, but I don’t want to disappoint anyone.  Thank you for understanding and for your awesome support!

Here is an updated list I mad with the varieties I’m out of in strikethrough font.  Some of the ones I have left, there are only a few plants, so I will substitute if I need to.  Thank you for your understanding.

Online Plant Ordering and Driveway Pickup Instructions

Plant Sale Changes due to the COVID-19 Situation

HouseSpring

In these uncertain times, I realize that it is even more important than ever for people to grow their own food.  I want to be able to supply gardeners across the city with the best possible tomato, pepper, eggplant, and herb plants in the safest manner possible. With the health crisis of COVID-19 and the need for social distancing to prevent the spread of the virus, I am changing my procedures to ensure greater safety for all of us and the ones we love.   As a result of this I will not have open sale dates this year, but will take online orders only.

2020 PLANT LIST CLICK HERE

Orders will be filled in order of plant pickup date.  Set your plant pickup date early to have the best chance at getting those special varieties.

If you are unable to pay with PayPal, you may mail me a check along with your list of plants and the date you want to pick them up.  Checks must be received at least one week before the plant pickup date you select.  Makes checks payable to James Worley, 215 East 97th Street, Kansas City, MO 64114

To keep things simple, I will not be selling grow bags or silver mulch film this year.  Doing these online pre-orders will be complicated and time consuming, so I am trying to streamline the process as much as possible.

Please realize that I have hundreds of gardeners visit my backyard each year for plant sales.  I love all of you and especially love seeing you and your families grow.  It pains me greatly not to see you this year, but this will pass and I’ll see you next spring!

Also keep in mind that I am very busy this year with my new business “Yum Yards” and may not have time to answer e-mail questions promptly.

Online Ordering and Driveway Pickup for Plant Sales this year.

Due to the COVID-19 virus and the need for social distancing to slow the spread of this, I will now not have open sale dates.  It pains me greatly not to be able to see all of your smiling faces, beautiful families, and talk tomato on the back patio, but we need to be responsible for the health of all of us.

I will post details in the next week about how to order my plants online and how to pick them up in my driveway.  I will also update the list as I’ve lost a few types of peppers and have an entire tray of tomato varieties I can’t find the sheet for!  Stay tuned for next week’s updated blog with the new list and information on how to order your plants and pick them up in a safe manner.

Thank you for your understanding….I miss all of you!

The 2020 Tomato, Pepper, Eggplant and Herb List

413679_10151911860030637_1134236407_o

The moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived!  The list is mostly complete in this form, but I may have a few varieties not listed and may have a few of these unavailable due to germination issues, but most of it is pretty accurate as of now.

THE LIST 2020!!!

I’ll likely have additional herbs available this year including PAPALO!  I’ll also have a nice selection of pickling and slicing cucumber plants as well.

My address is 215 East 97th Street, KCMO.  Please try to use the circle driveway to avoid parking on the street.  My house is on a bit of a blind hill and people drive too fast…be careful!

Thank you to all of you that have been growing my plants for 15 years now!  It’s a great honor and a pleasure to watch your families grow and make friendships in my backyard.

This Tomato Tasting Goes to ELEVEN!

11

We moved the tasting a few weeks to adjust for the crazy spring weather and we nearly hit the bull’s eye of peak tomato ripeness!  We had over 50 varieties represented at the lovely patio of the Local Pig’s new location in the City Market!  We didn’t vote this year, but I heard lots of comments about Purple Dog Creek, Black Cherry, Sunrise Bumblebee, and Carbon of course!  We had some great dishes at the potluck table including a delicious tomato tart, peach and tomato cobbler,  a roasted zucchini bread panzanella,  and a lovely tomato Salmorejo that was like drinking a garden!

At high noon we had the Third Annual Slow Food KC “BLT Challenge”!  First place winner was Katie Clausen, Second place went to Jennifer Nugent, and Third Place went to Ed Maurin. Congratulations to all the contestants!
